Great Books

2:00 PM - 3:30 PM
Keene Public Library
Eppes Room
Welcome to the 36th year of our local Great Books Discussion group!

Today's readings are  * Lewis Thomas's "The Lives of a Cell" (pp. 358-367) and Charles Johnson's "China" (p. 73)

The group meets in the Eppes Room on the first floor. Meetings are on Thursdays, starting at 2:00 p.m. and ending at about 3:30 p.m. Meetings are planned from September to June, with a long winter break.

The readings are from the following two anthologies:

1. The Best American Essays of the Century, ed. by Joyce Carol Oates and Robert Atwan, c.2000
This is the same book used during  2021-2023; the Keene Public Library has a copy.
Citations marked with an  * are from this book.

2. The Penguin Book of the Modern American Short Story, ed. by John Freeman, Penguin Books, c. 2021.

Great Books discussions are dedicated to close reading and exploration of the text, facilitated by the leader. The leader does not act as a teacher but poses questions that lead to a shared inquiry into the text's meaning and relevance. We take turns acting as discussion facilitators.

If you want to know more about Great Books discussion programs, please visit their website at www.greatbooks.org.
